TURMERIC –While you might be thinking ‘come on guys, this is SO last year’, turmeric everything is still super popular and still definitely one of our favs when it comes to its versatility and the abundance of health benefits it provides. Besides for the fact that it is the most amazing, vibrant colour that makes any type of food or drink look awesome (and so insta worthy), it also provides some pretty powerful healing properties. The main component of Turmeric is curcumin which is a strong antioxidant and provides anti-inflammatory properties. Some other benefits that have been well researched include weight loss and regulating blood sugar, relief of pain, particularly arthritis, as an anti-depressant and mood enhancer, aiding in digestion and reducing the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and cancer. In addition turmeric supports liver health by helping it to detoxify unwanted wastes into your gut. Which in turn helps to look after your skin and keep it glowing and fresh.
The best part is you can add it to virtually anything – soups, curries, lattes (yes we love a good golden latte), smoothies, protein balls, dips, fritters, eggs, pancakes – we have tried and tested it all. So get creative! We sell this baby in all different forms (from lots of different brands), as capsules and tablets, teas, drinking blends and spice mixes.
GREENS – Health conscious but time poor? (Or just kind of lazy?), get onto the greens powders. This superfood trend is big for a reason. Greens supplements are jam packed full of vitamins and minerals and they are super rich in nutrients and antioxidants. With ingredients like chlorella and spirulina they help to alkalize, cleanse, detoxify and energize the body by attracting heavy metals and pulling them through your digestive system in order to eliminate them from your body. Aiding with digestive health, acting as a metabolism booster, improving cardiovascular function and increasing energy are just some amazing qualities that have been linked to greens powders. It is also super easy to incorporate greens into your daily routine by adding a few teaspoons into some water and drinking in the morning or throughout the day or adding into a green smoothie.
HEMP – The humble Chia seed seems to have a fierce competitor. Hemp is the super-healthy seed that is trending right now and we know why. Hemp seeds are a great source of protein, vitamin E and many minerals such as phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfur, calcium, iron and zinc. Also, because they contain high amounts of the amino acid arginine, which is used to produce nitric oxide in the body, they are linked to lowered blood pressure and a reduced risk of heart disease. If that wasn’t enough, due to being a good source of polyunsaturated and essential fatty acids, hemp (specifically hemp oil) helps to sooth and hydrate misbehaving skin and relieve skin disorders such as eczema. This very versatile seed can be eaten raw, toasted, sprinkled on yogurt or salads or ground into seed butter or oil.
NUT BUTTERS – So obviously we are massive peanut butter fans (and always will be) and yes it has been a household staple for many years but the other nuts have joined the party to step up the game. With a plethora of choices such almond, cashew, macadamia, hazelnut, Brazil nut or a mix of them all, the world is your oyster. All these nuts are a great source of health fats and they all offer different nutrient benefits (depending on the type of nut) such as protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals.
We love eating them by the spoonful straight from the jar or using them to make different snacks and desserts but we are now really starting to see these nut butters take over the foodie arena with people concocting all sorts of incredible creations with them. People are going NUTS for the stuff!
FERMENTED FOODS – A bit of an oldie but definitely a goodie. Sauerkraut, kimchi, pickles, miso, kefir, yogurt, tempeh, and kombucha – these gut-loving foods have some very powerful health benefits. They are an awesome probiotic which provide beneficial bacteria into your digestive system and help the balance of bacteria in your digestive system. Probiotics also have been shown to improve bowel health and immunity. Fermented foods are full of enzymes, vitamins and minerals and they helps remove toxins from the body and absorb nutrients better. Fermenting food enhances the nutritional profile of the ingredients as well as preserving them to last longer. Most importantly all of these foods are so full of rich delicious flavours and tastes.
MEDICNIAL MUSHROOMS – Yep, they really are magic. Medicinal mushrooms have been used for thousands of years in Traditional Chinese Medicine and are finally gaining mainstream popularity. There are so many different medicinal mushroom varieties each with amazing therapeutic properties and health benefits. Many have been linked to immunological and anti-cancer properties as well as anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-viral, anti-microbial, anti-hypertensive and cholesterol-lowering properties, liver protection and antioxidants. There is also a lot of research to suggest that these mushrooms have a strong effect on mind and body stress relief. They are a true example of food as medicine.
